Psaki: ‘No Mission Accomplished' Moment’ in Afghanistan as U.S. Exits

Previewing remarks scheduled to take place later Thursday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden is "not going to ask another generation of kids to serve in Afghanistan in a war he doesn't think can be won militarily."

Joe Biden is due to address his administration's ongoing efforts to wind down the U.S. war in Afghanistan in a speech expected to highlight the security challenges he inherited and outline U.S. humanitarian efforts going forward.

He'll be justifying his decision to end U.S. military operations even as the Taliban make rapid advances in significant swaths of the country.

The White House also said the president supported the Olympic Games scheduled later this month in Japan.

"We support the games moving forward," said press secretary Jen Psaki.

Psaki also discussed the situation in Haiti, a day after President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated.

She defended Biden from remarks he made as a senator in 1984, where he dismissed Haiti as important to American interests.

"He issued a statement in his voice yesterday about the horrific killing of the president and he's made clear to the administration, administration officials that we are stand ready to assist in any way they need, whether it's in the investigation or other federal assistance we can offer from here. Sends you a clear message about his care and concern for the people of Haiti," she said,

Psaki said the Biden administration continues to call for free and fair elections in the country.
