It happened while we were working. There was the question on the table: “What is the most powerful force that rules our lives?” Images of dead people started to arise on the stage. Stories about last moments of their lives, absurd and stupid, tragic and comic, fictional and real, believable and unbelievable started to unfold. And then this news breaks out: “People were falling form the sky”, said Ukraine eyewitness of downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH-17. Sabrina Tavernise, the New York Times reporter, describes the scene of tragedy: “A woman in a black sweater lay on her back, blood streaming from her face, her left arm raised as if signalling someone … A young boy, who looked to be around ten years old, lay on his side in a red T-shirt that read “Don’t Panic”… One man, still in his socks, but without pants, lay akimbo on the field, his right arm placed on his stomach, as if in repose … A young man in blue shorts, wearing red Nike sneakers, lay with his arms and legs splayed outward, clutching his iPhone.” And so on and so forth.
Senseless deaths. Always the main news. Always prime time. Always the most powerful image. But the most striking fact followed few days later. All these deaths were a mistake. There was some lack of knowledge, some clumsiness, some militant overheating… Yes it’s possible we said, well it happens we thought, okay now we understand what happened. The end. But what do we understand?
And so on and so forth wonders how far we can push our understanding and what happens when the mind can not justify our lives anymore. “There is only one really serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide,” writes Albert Camus in his essay The Myth of Sisyphus. Nevertheless “Should I kill myself?” this truly essential question remains without any reasonable answer up to date. Why the hell then we are still so passionately in love with Reason?
