The CA EDD just sent out a very important PUA unemployment update through text messages and messages to their UI Online Inbox to people with California PUA unemployment claims requesting proof of employment. This may look familiar, like you’ve already done this and many of you have when you were asked for proof of income if you requested a higher amount of PUA benefits but this is different because it also applies to people who are receiving the base amount of PUA unemployment benefits. PUA benefits were payable to people even if they didn’t have any wage history if they told the EDD that they had a job offer that they were not able to start due to the pandemic. Now the EDD is required by the DOL (department of labor) to ask you for proof that you had a legitimate job offer. We do not yet know yet what documents will be acceptable to prove this but in other states, they accepted an offer letter on company letter head or an affidavit from a prospective employer. If you have already submitted proof of income, it is unknown if the EDD will ask you to submit documents again however, the same documents like your schedule C would be acceptable to prove self employment and I would recommend submitting the same documents again for consistency if you are asked. If you do not have proof of self employment, employment or an offer of employment, it is possible the California EDD would send you an overpayment notice and you might owe the EDD any money paid to your going back as far as December 27th, 2020. If you do get an overpayment here’s what you should do, you should request an overpayment waiver which the state may or may not grant depending on if you received PUA unemployment benefits through no fault of your own and if it would create a financial hardship to repay the benefits. It is very important that you send the EDD this requested information even if you are no longer collecting PUA unemployment benefits so please share this video with anyone you know that was getting PUA unemployment benefits here in the state of California.

* I think everyone should be able to get ahold of the CA EDD for free, I still advocate calling (833) 978-2511 the best days to call the EDD are Tuesday through Saturday, the best times to call the EDD are right when they open at 8:00 to 8:15 or later in the afternoon around 2:30 - 4:00 then after the long intro message quickly hit 1,3,4.
