Quite remarkable. England were solid with a minute to go until tea... on 138 for 3 with Root and Bairstow well entrenched. But then Bairstow was extracted by Shami, and India's seamers got busy, ripping through a fallow batting line-up that can barely remember what a Dukes ball looks like. Root's 64 was the only score of note, though Sam Curran's late tonking massaged the score. 4,3,2,1 wickets for the quicks. Jadeja lurking in case of spin in the second innings. Fair to say India have stolen a march

Match Report
A day to remember for India - they lost the toss and that was the only thing they got wrong. A good toss to lose? Burns fell in the first over and that set the template. Zak Crawley got a start, Joe Root got his customary half-century, but no one went on to convert it into a bigger knock. But that doesn't tell the entire story. A collapse of 6 for 22 does tell though, as the hosts slid from 138 for 3 to 160 for 9. Sam Curran ensured a few more runs as England finally managed 183. The final hour was expected to be tricky and so it proved, but Rahul and Rohit went about solidly, there were the plays and misses, but they did look in control for most part of it. England's bowling, although disciplined lacked the guile that the Indians had shown earlier in the day. As such, the visitors are 162 behind with 10 wickets in hand.

Reaction
Shardul Thakur: It was cloudy for a while and I was really happy that we got 10 wickets. If you see he (Root) had played a few balls and he was playing really well and looked poised for a big score. At that period, getting him out was crucial for us and we got him. Really happy (on getting Root's wicket). One of the top batters in the world, whether you get him in the 60s or 90s it's always a good wicket to have. If you look at the pitch it looked like it won't spin much and felt better to go with 4 pacers and one spinner combination. Enjoying the English conditions, it's swinging and hopefully it will stay the same. We got good pitches to practice in Durham and really enjoyed the conditions there. Since he retired, why not bring him back into the game (On coach Ravi Shastri calling him Beefy)
