Streams of lava from Spain's La Palma volcano scorched houses on Monday, forcing thousands of people to be evacuated after the Canary Islands saw its first volcanic eruption in 50 years.
The volcano erupted on Sunday, shooting lava hundreds of meters into the air, engulfing houses and forests, and sending molten rock towards the Atlantic Ocean over the area of La Palma, the most northwestern island in the Canaries archipelago.
The lava is set to reach the ocean at around 8 p.m. local time, regional leader Angel Victor Torres said on Monday, in what could trigger toxic gases and reduce visibility at sea.
No fatalities have been reported but the volcano was still active on Monday.
