人事を尽くして天命を待つ
人事を尽くす means to “focus and do everything you can,” and 天命を待つ means to “wait for your destiny.” I like to translate this to... “Do your best, and let nature do the rest.”
No matter how much effort we put into something, there is no guarantee
that we will succeed, and we cannot control what others think and do. The one and only thing that we CAN control is our own actions and feelings.
The fundamental philosophy of Zen is “即今、当処、自己,” which means “now, here, and myself.” It teaches us that the only way we can always maintain a calm mind and live peacefully, is to constantly focus on what
we can do here in this moment, and do it with all your effort.
This quote 人事を尽くして天命を待つ is my life motto, and I actually had a SHODO calligraphy master in Kyoto make this hanging scroll just for us
when we started our business.
