The world between worlds in Star Wars Rebels (canon) made us realize that there exists a time and space in Star Wars where all events in the galaxy at any time can be seen or heard. Ezra grabbed Ahsoka as she fought Vader and saved her through the portal.
Palpatine was able to open the portal, somewhat, and reach into it with the force after using some Sith sorcercy.
