India registered 7,579 new cases of coronavirus on November 23, 2021, the lowest daily infection number reported since May 2020. Cases have continued to drop even though large crowds recently gathered to celebrate Diwali, one of the most popular Hindu festivals in the country. In May 2020, India experienced a devastating second wave of coronavirus infections that caused a health system collapse. As of July 2021, nearly 70 per cent of Indians had developed natural immunity after being infected, according to government data. India has the world’s second-highest number of cases, following the United States.
