Volkswagen democratized the coupe SUV, formerly reserved for the luxury segment, with the Atlas Cross Sport. Its attractive bodywork spruces up the regular Atlas three-row crossover's bland design. This sloped-roof SUV has seating for five with more legroom as a result of the deleted back row. For 2022, Volkswagen slimmed down the list of available trims.
The Atlas Cross Sport benefits from a lot of the advantages of the three-row Atlas. Both are spacious and have lots of room for cargo. However, these two models also share a significant shortcoming: They are dynamically challenged. Despite its rakish looks, we found the Atlas Cross Sport to be underpowered, as well. Fuel economy is another issue that plagues the entire Atlas model range, no matter which engine powers the crossover.
Volkswagen offers a choice of a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four or a 3.6-liter V-6 engine in the Atlas Cross Sport. The former makes 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and the latter develops 276 hp and 266 lb-ft. Unfortunately, both options yield underwhelming performance. The Atlas Cross Sport is available with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy isn't very impressive, either. With the four-cylinder engine, the 2022 Atlas Cross Sport gets 21/25 mpg city/highway, or 20/24 mpg with AWD. With the V-6, the SUV is rated 18/24 mpg in both FWD and AWD guises.
