A Surprising Fact About Kyoto that No One Teaches You #Shorts

From the common image of “Kyoto is the most traditional city in Japan,” you might imagine the people are always eating Kaiseki dishes and drinking matcha. Of course that is one of its features, but Kyoto is actually the prefecture in Japan that consumes the most amount of bread and coffee.

Because the competition of stores is fierce, the quality is very high, so I hope you can try it out in Kyoto. But why do people in Kyoto love bread and coffee so much?

1. Anpan (bread rolls filled with red bean paste) became very popular

Kyoto had an abundant supply of red bean paste due to all the sweets made for tea ceremonies, so it was easier to supply anpan. This became a trigger for bread to become popular.

2. Kyoto has many craftspeople, and bread was a convenient fast food

This is the same reason sushi was a popular fast food in Edo (current day Tokyo) a long time ago. Because the center city of Kyoto is not close to any oceans like Tokyo, it is difficult for people to supply fish, and that’s why bread was more convenient for them.
