We’re told a voting populace is an essential part of a healthy democracy, but do our votes actually matter? I called a Columbia University statistician to find out what the science says…

THAT COIN-TOSS ELECTION IN VIRGINIA? DRAMATIC. BUT IT PALES IN COMPARISON TO OTHER HISTORIC CONTESTS

This is a GREAT story about some of the elections that were decided in ties, or straws. There’s a good history here, and it highlights just how messy democracy can be!
WHAT IS THE PROBABILITY YOUR VOTE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

at read into how statisticians think about elections. Obviously, they’re people too, so they have opinions about voting, but in these papers you can see what happens when you apply pure logic to something that is more ethereal — like civics.
Special thanks to Dr Andrew Gelman of Columbia University for jumping on the phone on such short notice!

P.S — A lot of people think their vote doesn’t matter because of the Electoral College. But the electoral college only comes into play for presidential races, and there the election focuses on The States… which makes sense, if you think of our history. We were not founded as ONE NATION, we were founded as a collection of states with an oversight government. (Think like the E.U. — though not at all) Because we are a collection of states, not one federal body, you’re only against people in YOUR STATE. Even though you might think your vote gets lost in a sea of national population, you’re only voting against your fellow Idahoans, or Michiganians, or Connectic…utters? Connectikites? How did we get these names… I have questions… However you feel about the Electoral College (please tell me!) the truth is we carry these vestigial systems because of the Framers fights! Some wanted a strong federal government, others wanted strong states.
P.P.S -- In the end, think of this: if you honestly believe a vote doesn’t matter, why do people spend so much time, money and effort try and suppress it? I’m no economist, but could you not argue every dollar and hour spent trying to suppress votes could be used to calculate how much a single vote is worth? (If you do the math LMK!) 🇺🇸✅☑️👍🙏🚨💪
