Jim Baird: Beyond the Height-of-Land: 25 Days High Adventure Camping in the Northern Manitoba Wilderness: My brother Ted Baird and I planned to solo canoe and bushwhack portage 700 kilometres across Northern Manitoba via three rivers. One of which, we'd have to ascend to a height-of-land. Float plane access placed us on a remote river with the goal of making it to Hudson Bay via the spectacular Seal River where Polar Bears can create danger. Outfitting including trail tape, compasses, maps, GPS and drybags in tow, we'd solo whitewater, enjoy camping and fishing for walleye, Northern Pike and Arctic Grayling which we'd cook over the fire. Our daily distance was over 34 kilometres each day, a challenging pace for solo paddlers. Also, bug spray was mandatory, the bugs were bad and the water was very high!
