China has said it firmly opposes any participation by Taiwan in the United Nations as it responded to the United States' call on UN member states to push for the Island's participation at the world body. Beijing warned Washington that its Taiwan moves could "damage the peace and stability across the Taiwan strait". China insisted that Taiwan had no right to join the United Nations and called on the U.S to respect the one-China policy. Tensions between China and the U.S have escalated in recent weeks after Chinese jets intruded into Taiwanese air space.
