Madan: Hello everyone, I am Madan Gowri. Today, we have musician Tenma with us.
We are going to discuss a few personal experiences from our lives. It is mainly about caste and creators. We are going to discuss how the two things merge in our community. We hope this discussion becomes a starting point for many other discussions to follow.
Hi Tenma, how are you doing?

Tenma: Hi Madan! Good, how are you Madan?

Madan: Doing good Tenma! I am really happy that I am meeting you on this platform.

Tenma: Thank you! I am glad we are able to do this. The very idea of discussing this, will lead to a healthy space I think.

Madan: Anyway, Tenma! My first question for today’s discussion - among the content that you have watched, which ones do you think weren’t caste sensitive, where, people offend others unknowingly, in some places, they offend others knowingly.

Tenma: Now, if someone speaks about caste politics, people think they discriminate based on caste. They may build a different opinion about them. But politics that discriminates based on caste and social justice have not been thought about deeply, because, generally, nobody talks about these topics with us.
Race is highly visualistic, there you clearly come from a geographical place,it can be a geographical location, also because of situational location, you can easily identify a race because of these. We should look at social justice and equality here.

Madan: Agreed. But, the doubt that I have, many creators, especially, those who are mainstream, unknowingly, they themselves tease the subject. What do you think we can do to not encourage these creators?

Tenma: The main thing is appropriation.Take something as simple as if we’re labelling a society or a group of people, or stereotyping a group of people - first of all, try to understand and know them even if it doesn’t suit you, or it doesn’t suit the culture or the way you grew up in. Learn about it.
Then, for example, if I go around and talk like as if I am from another caste, and how that would irritate you, in the same manner, when you stereotype and portray the lifestyle of a boy or a girl from another background, you don’t realize how much it would hurt them, and claiming that you are doing it for the trend, it’s a highly foolish thing.

Madan: True. And, I would like to ask you something as a concluding question,
and an important question. That is we would have come across many situations
when someone posts something highly offensive, after posting it, they always shield themselves by saying they did it in ignorance.

Tenma: I know, it is very tricky. We can always escape claiming we did it out of ignorance.
First of all, in this, restorative justice is very important.
Why was a mistake committed on the subject?
It’s not necessary that a social media trial should follow this.
Because, the toughest thing is to unlearn.
At least, in the forthcoming videos or whatever, we’ll be able to see some change. If you’re not able to see some change even after that, we should not pay attention to a creator like that.

Madan: Correct, one take away for me from this discussion would be, learn, unlearn, relearn and repeat forever till you die. It was actually great talking to you, Tenma.
And thanks to YouTube for arranging this.
And we need to discuss many subjects like these in many languages.
Since YouTube is in a position to take this to many places. I am also so happy!
So thanks to YouTube India and Tenma.
And signing off here, Madan Gowri, cheers!

Tenma: Thank you.
