3 months to Dubai Expo 2020 | What's on the other side?

Constantly striving to showcase itself on the global stage, the UAE received the opportunity to host Expo 2020 in #Dubai in 2013

The event was rescheduled on 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022, following the rapid spread of coronavirus across the UAE

It led to a lockdown in the country, despite which the migrant workers were forced to continue working for #Expo2020

The Emirates was condemned for the discriminatory treatment of these foreign workers, who are regularly abused and exploited by the Emirati authorities

Homelessness and poverty are not typically visible in this glitzy country, but the situation completely differs in the case of migrant workers

Many companies in the UAE are known for confiscating the passports, late payments, providing unsafe working conditions and forcing workers to live in poor conditions. The situations for these workers worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic

As the country will soon host Expo 2020, the focus on its #humanrights records has intensified. A total of 192 countries will participate in Expo 2020, which will take place in a country struggling over human rights

In June 2021, the UAE was urged to end the arbitrary detention of 60 individuals, who were convicted in the “UAE-94” case on trumped-up charges

The Arab country was also accused of falsely imprisoning and torturing Matthew Hedges, a British academic who was convicted of spying after going to Dubai for research

The UAE has also continued its deep involvement in Yemen, despite claiming of withdrawing their military.

The conflict has displaced millions and nearly 250,000 people have been killed, mostly at the hands of the UAE and Saudi-led coalition

In Libya too, the Emirates has conducted unlawful strikes and provided military support to the abusive local forces of Khalifa Haftar

Besides, the country is also involved in
- terror funding,
- hacking activists, and
- money laundering

Expo 2020 is just a way out for the Emirates to attract millions of visitors from around the world and help rebuild the country’s image.
